Capitals of Culture 2009

Liverpool's reign as a European Capital of Culture has come to an end and the city has now handed the batten to Linz in Austria and Vilnius in Lithuania.

Linz, which I have written about as part of my occasional series of articles about a journey along the Danube, sits on its banks and is just 90 minutes from Vienna. It is a green but busy, modern, city that boasts links with a number of interesting historical figures, notably Kepler, Bruckner and Mozart.

Co-host Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania, which this year celebrates its 1000th anniversary. The country was first mentioned in the monastic records Annales Quedlinburgensis, or Annals of Quedlinburg, in 1009.
