Driving the Silk Road

Ted Davis has been taking a road trip along the legendary Silk Road, following in the footsteps of historic travellers like Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and Marco Polo. He writes about the experience in an interesting and informative article in Canada's National Post.

In centuries past the 14,000 kilometres trip could have taken years by camel but nowadays it only takes about two months by car, though Ted's opening remarks indicate that the road from China to eastern Europe can make for a rather bumpy adventure, literally.

It has just been announced that Kazakhstan is to improve a major road, running 2715 km, from Khorgos on Kazakhstan's border with the China, through Almaty and Shymkent, and then onto its western border with Russia. Billed as the new Silk Road, it will be a few years before the road is completed, with economic benefits being forecast for 2020. So plenty of time to plan a road trip along the new route.
