Cancun News

Another post about bad weather. Most people are aware of the devastation caused by hurricane Wilma to Cancun and the Riviera Maya including the islands of Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. The region was pounded for 60 hours by heavy rain as well as hurricane force winds.

It looks as if it will be several months before the area is running normally again, but the extent of the damage is clearly patchy, with some areas having fared relatively well.

Cancun Travel Online is acting as an information hub and has useful, open access forums. A post today from Playa Del Carmen reported that some telephone services have been restored and that all pay phones that are LADA or owned by Telemex which have not been destroyed physically, will be functioning free of charge, for people to call to their families and friends anywhere in the world.

The internet has again proved to be a valuable communication tool and sites like Isla Mujeres Speak Easy have allowed friends and relatives to contact each other.
