British Open
Golf Championship

Jack Nicklaus brings his competitive career to a close at St Andrews on Thursday, when he tees off on day one of the British Golf Open 2005. He is in group 8 with five-time Open champion Tom Watson and Luke Donald, scheduled to start at 07:47.

Nicklaus, who holds a record 18 major titles, was twice triumphant at St Andrews and said that "With what it has meant to me I thought it was the appropriate place to finish my career."

Half an hour earlier, last years title holder Todd Hamilton is due on course to start the defence of his crown; he will be playing alongside double US Open champion Retief Goosen and Lee Westwood in group 5.

Tiger Woods, who won on the course with a record 19 under par score of 269 in 2000, when the Open was last at St Andrews, strikes out at 08:20 in the company of José Maria Olazabal and Robert Allenby. However, the course been lengthened by 164 yards since Tigers' memorable victory, with the creation of five new championship tees; the course par is 72.

Rival Vijay Singh, in group 32 with Shigeki Maruyama and Jim Furyk, will not be teeing off until 13:42 in the afternoon.
