50 knots no barrier

So say the guys at Howes-Macnaghten Technology.

The Howes-Macnaghten Monofoil ® has been under development for 7 years and is regarded as the world's most advanced speed sailing craft.

A picture on their web site looks like something from Star Wars and it's difficult to make out which bits go in the water but if you look at a brief movie clip it becomes clear that the usual vertical sail is replaced by horizontal aerofoils; imagine a small aeroplane mounted above the hull on a mast.

A similar concept from Stephen Bourn can be seen on the Fresh Innovators forum site.

However, crucial to the Howes-Macnaghten design is the attention that they have paid to the water interface; their approach both avoids cavitation and is not dependent on flat water.
